The Student Representatives of the Dresden International PhD Program are pleased to announce the next DIPP* Vision Talk:
What is Complexity?
Ivo Sbalzarini (MPI-CBG)
Tuesday, February 14th, 2017
MPI-CBG Auditorium, 4:00 pm
We often hear and say: “Biological systems are complex.” But what do we mean by that? What is complexity? The concept has many meanings, from lack of knowledge (epistemic complexity) to true system randomness (alleatory complexity). In mathematics and computer science, there are formal definitions of complexity. In this talk, I will review some of the inherent properties of biological systems that render them (appear?) complex, and I will discuss different concepts and definitions of complexity, bridging the disciplines.
All are welcome to enjoy this visionary talk and a lively discussion afterwards.
DIPP Vision Talks aim at giving insight into the research fields represented in the DIPP. They offer - from the perspective of the speaker's expertise - a significant overview of the field, including open questions, existing resources and techniques, challenges and the possible future developments.
* The Dresden International PhD Program (DIPP) is jointly organized by the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB) and the International Max Planck Research School for Cell, Developmental and Systems Biology (IMPRS-CellDevoSys).
